Better business English: Make sure people understand what is important
Foreign language students sometimes find it hard to get listeners to comprehend everything they say. Here are some techniques you can use:
Is it vital? Say so
People are not listening all the time so introduce important points with the right words, such as “This is essential” or “Please listen carefully”. Listeners don’t know what’s important until you tell them!
Pause, lower your pitch and slow your speed
Pause for two seconds before and after a crucial point. Then, slightly lower your pitch and slow your tempo to add relevance to statements.
Move
Accompany anything important with a lifted hand. Walk towards the audience when making a point, or simply stand up. Movement attracts attention.
Segment your audience
If part of your speech is directed at a group, let them know. Imagine talking to doctors and nurses. By saying “Now I’ll speak primarily to the nurses in this room” you’ll allow the doctors to drift off and be ready for the moment when you need their attention.
Easy, isn’t it? Try these tricks and people will understand everything you consider important.
