We often say a picture is worth a thousand words. Gestures are like small pictures you draw with your body. They will help you if you are speaking a foreign language—even when people don’t understand all your words.
Gestures make your message clearer: When you use your body to highlight what you mean, it’s easier for others to understand you.
Gestures help you speak more naturally: Using gestures that connect to your words will make you seem more relaxed, and in control of what you are saying.
Smile when you are pleased, clap when you approve, shake your head when you don’t, move near a person if you like what they say, stand up straight to make an important statement, etc.
How do others use gestures?
One way to see how other people use gestures is to watch shows or movies. Pay attention to how actors move their bodies when they speak. Try to copy some of their gestures and make them your own by finding a style that feels comfortable.
How do others see me?
Of course, sometimes, we don’t realize what our own gestures look like. A great way to see yourself as others do is to record yourself on video.
Talk: Tell a short story about your day, describe your job, or explain something easy.
Watch: You’ll see whether your gestures look natural and whether they help to explain your message. Do they match what you are saying? Do you look comfortable?
Adjust: If you feel uneasy with some, try to change them.
In summary, don’t be afraid to use your body when you speak. Magnify your gestures, and others will understand you better!
