English is a language that changes very quickly. We often find neologisms (new words) and informal expressions (slang), which makes understanding difficult.
What to do about neologisms
- Focus on your field! Read recent articles, follow industry blogs, and watch relevant videos.
- Attending a conference? Research the latest topics beforehand.
- Use AI tutors! Ask them for lists of new terms in your profession.
What to do about slang
- Slang is mostly spoken. If you’ll be around a specific group (like a music band or hobby association), watch videos of them talking.
- Again, AI tutors can help. Ask them to simulate conversations with members of that group.
Can teachers help?
Unfortunately, teachers often can’t help with neologisms and slang, because they may not know the specific words you need. The best way to learn them is by studying on your own.
