Effective communication goes beyond words. Gestures will help people follow you when you speak English, even if they don’t understand some of your words.
- Hold eye contact when expressing important points.
- If you’re describing something, draw it with your hands.
- Move from side to side in a room (or change the angle if you’re sitting) when presenting alternatives.
- Clap or nod as you agree.
- Smile when you feel comfortable.
- If you want someone to wait, open both palms towards them.
- Count your fingers while you enumerate.
- Shake your head to show disagreement.
- Laugh when you tell a joke.
Body movement will add emphasis to your voice and clarity to your message. Gestures reinforce your spoken words and highlighting key points— while movement keeps your audience actively involved.
